Soil Test Record · Soil test log for Google Sheets™

See which fields are due for a soil test, and which are turning acid.

Every soil test you’ve had done, by field and by date. It counts down to each field’s next test and shows you the latest pH on every one.

The problem

The reports are in a drawer, and none of them says when to test again.

North 40 was tested in 2020. Or was it 2021? One lab emailed a PDF, the extension office mailed a printout, and the third report is somewhere in the truck.

Each one tells you what the soil was doing that day. None of them tells you West hay has been sliding toward acid for years, or that two fields are already overdue.

What's inside

Every test in one place, and the next one counted down.

Log each test on the Tests tab as the report comes in: the date, the field, the lab, pH, organic matter, phosphorus, potassium and anything else the lab measured. Say how many years that field goes between tests. The file finds the newest test for each field, works out when the next one is due and counts the days.

It records what the lab reported. It doesn’t tell you how much lime or fertilizer to put down. That’s still your call, or your agronomist’s.

  • Tests. One row per soil test, with the date, the field, the lab and the figures off the report.
  • Next test due. Worked out from each field’s newest test and how many years you go between them.
  • Days away. A countdown on each field’s newest test, which turns negative once it’s overdue.
  • The Dashboard. Fields due to test, how many are overdue, which one is next, fields tested, the lowest pH and tests this year.
  • pH by field. A chart of each field’s latest pH, so the ones drifting acid stand out.
  • Red and gold. A next due date already passed turns red. One inside sixty days turns gold.
  • Other readings. Zinc, boron, sulfur, CEC or whatever else your lab reports, in a column of its own.
  • A date you choose. Type one on the Dashboard and every countdown works from it. Clear it and the file reads today.
  • Set up. Your own fields and labs, behind the dropdowns on the Tests tab.
  • Sample tests. Eighteen made-up tests across seven fields, so the figures make sense before you type your own.

Questions

Before you buy.

Does it tell me how much lime or fertilizer to apply?

No. It records what the lab reported and when each field is due again. Rates are a call for you and your agronomist.

Can fields be on different schedules?

Yes. Each test carries its own number of years between tests, so a hayfield on three years and an orchard every year both count down correctly.

What happens to the old tests?

They stay. Add a new row for every test and never type over an old one. The newest row for a field is the one that counts down, and the rest are your history.

S

Test the field before the crop tells you something’s wrong.
